1870 Rules Kind to the Blue and Black

On June 25, the Diamond State Base Ball Club traveled north to Rahway, NJ to participate in 1870-rule matches hosted by the Elizabeth Resolutes.

In their first match of the day, the Delaware nine faced off against the Providence Grays.  The Blue and Black strikers were powered by a pair of 9-tally innings on their way to building a 27-7 advantage going into the last innings.  The Providence side put up a fight by tallying 10 aces in their final turn, but their comeback attempt came up short as the Diamond States came out victorious by the score of 27-17.  The DSBBC strikers were led by Blackbart (7 hits, 2 doubles) and Boots (6 hits, 1 double)

In the second match of the day, the Diamond States met the host club from Elizabeth in a high-scoring, back and forth affair that saw the visitors trailing by a single ace going into their last turn at the line.  The Delaware bats were able to take a 3-ace advantage and hold off the New Jersey nine for a slim 28-25 victory. The striking effort was lead by Lightning (6 hits, 2 triples, home run) and Boots (4 hits, 2 doubles, home run).
