In the first match of the day, the Diamond States faced off with the Lewes nine.  The crowd was treated to a closely contested match that saw the Blue and Black tallying single aces in each of their first 2 innings, which holding the Lewes club scoreless.  The Sussex County team plated a pair of aces in their fifth inning to even the score and then pulled ahead with aces in their sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-2 advantage.  The Diamond State strikers had their best inning of the game in the seventh, scoring three aces to regain the lead.  The upstate nine was on the brink of victory before the Lewes club managed an ace in the top of the ninth to even the tallies.  In their 9th turn at the line, the Blue and Black needed only 2 strikers to capture victory as Memphis led off with a double and came home on a single from Boots.

With the victory, the Diamond State club earned the opportunity to face off with the Excelsior BBC of Milford.  The Blue and Black jumped out to an early advantage with five aces in their third inning.  However, exceptional fielding and pitching by the Milford club held the Diamond States scoreless for the remainder of the match.  Meanwhile, despite a strong effort in the field by the Diamond States, the Milford club was able to slowly chip away at the lead.  A four-ace inning gave the Milford a cushion that the Blue and Black weren’t able to overcome, falling by a final score of 8-5.  The Diamond State strikers were led by Memphis, Split and Triple B, each with 2 hits.

With the split, the Diamond States’ record on the season stands at 5 wins to 2 losses.

The Diamond State Base Ball Club will return to action on Saturday, May 17 for their home opener at Ft. DuPont.  The Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia will join them for Fergy Malone Day, with festivities beginning at 12:45 pm.
