Diamond State Stymies Athletic Club

August 12, 2012 – A friendly match of this invigorating and healthful game called base ball was played yesterday on the grounds of Twin Lakes brewery near Greenville, Del. yesterday between the Diamond State Club and Athletic of Philadelphia.  The sizable crowd enthusiastically cheered the fine play by the nines on both sides.

The visiting Athletics’ strong fielding in the first frame held Diamond State scoreless, while quickly plating two aces.  But Diamond State would not be denied for the remainder of the match, tallying 25 times , while holding the Quaker City gentleman to 8 aces.

Catcher Frank “Flying Dutchman” Brevoort, IV led the way for the Blue and Black logging 5 hits in 5 chances, including 2 home runs, a triple and 4 aces.  Third Baseman Rob “Lightning” Zappaterrinni also had 5 hits with two doubles, a triple and 4 aces.  Center fielder Andy “Zombie” Lynch, left fielder Matt “Black Bart” Bartnicki, shortstop Jeff “Gator” Wallace, right fielder Logan “Lobo” Medkeff and Brian “Anchor” Betts all had multiple hits for Diamond State.   Pitcher Dan “Mini” Minutola kept Athletic strikers off balance for most of the match with another expert performance.  Athletic third baseman Rob “Pits” Wishnick starred for the visitors with 3-5 performance, including 3 aces.

On August 25, Diamond State will host ballists from the Lewes Club of Delaware and the Mutual of New York on their home grounds at Fort DuPont State Park in Delaware City.  All three clubs will play one another in a total of three matches beginning at 11:00 a.m.
