Diamond States Make New Friends in Gettysburg

The Diamond State BBC spent the weekend of July 18-19 at the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival.  They had the opportunity to face 3 new opponents in the Providence Greys from Rhode Island, the Capital BBC of Columbus, OH and the Spring Creek Nine of Mumford, NY.  Our fourth match of the weekend was against a combined nine consisting of members of the Gotham BBC and Hoboken Nine.

Saturday started with stormy skies, but once the clouds cleared, the DSBBC met the Greys for a tightly contested match, with the Diamond States clinging to a 3-0 lead after the first 5 innings.  However, the Rhode Island bats came alive to the tune of 8 aces over their next 3 innings.  The Blue and Black made a valiant attempt at a comeback with 3 tallies in their last turn, but came up short by the final of 8-6.

The second match of the day was a low-scoring affair with the Capital BBC.  The Ohio club jumped ahead with 3 aces in their first turn, but a defensive battle ensued with the Delaware nine holding their opponents to only a single tally for the duration of the match.  However, they were able to only tally a single ace of their own, ending up on the short end of a 4-1 result.

Sunday began with a match against the Gotham/Hoboken nine as the Diamond States took the field in the hopes of turning around their fortunes.  Effective pitching from Thunder held the opponent to a single ace in the first inning and two more in the final frame as the Diamond State strikers had 6 aces cross the plate for a 6-3 victory.

The Blue and Black concluded the weekend with a match against the Spring Creek Nine.  The Delaware club was undone by a 6-ace inning on the part of the Spring Creek club while managing just a single tally of their own on the way to a 10-1 defeat.

The Diamond State players enjoyed the opportunity to expand their circle in the vintage base ball community and hope to have the opportunity to meet these clubs again in the future.
