Diamond States Split Pair at Milford

The Diamond State Base Ball Club traveled to Harrington on April 27 to take on defending Delaware Cup champion Excelsior BBC of Milford.  The first match was a back and forth affair through the early innings, as the Blue and Black clung to a narrow 6-3 advantage after 7 innings.  The Diamond State strikers drove 4 tallies across the plate in the 8th inning and despite a late surge by the Milford club, held on for the 9-6 victory.  The Diamond States were led at the striker’s line by Gator, Blackbart and Dutch, each reaching base four times in their five trips to the line.

 

The Excelsior fought back with avengence in the second match.  They jumped out to an early lead and played extraordinary defense to keep the visitors off of the tally sheet.  The match ended with Milford holding a 12-0 advantage.  Blackbart added a pair of hits in three trips to the line to lead the Diamond State nine.  The loss was the first of the year for the Diamond States, dropping their overall record to 4 wins and 1 loss.

 

On May 4, the Diamond State BBC will join their fellow First State ballists from the Lewes BBC and the Excelsior of Milford during Dover Days on the Legislative Green.  Pre-game ceremonies will begin at 11:00 am with first pitch scheduled for 11:30 am.  The initial match will pit the Diamond States against the Lewes club.  The winner will then face the Excelsior in the afternoon match.  Information about the Dover Days festivities, including directions and parking information is available at www.doverdaysfestival.com
