Diamond States, Atlas, Athletic of Philadelphia Honor Fergy Malone

Trophy Ball presented to the Malone family

On May 17, 2014 the Diamond State Base Ball Club played their home opener at Ft. DuPont State Park against the Athletic BBC of Philadelphia.  The day’s festivities honored 19th century team member Fergy Malone, who went on to a successful career that included revolutionizing the catching position.

The day’s festivities started with presentations on the life and career of Malone by John Medkeff and Jeff Kabacinski of the Diamond State BBC and Greg Stoloski of the Athletic BBC of Philadelphia.  A trophy ball was presented to the Malone family that was on-hand for the day’s events and ceremonial first pitches were delivered by two members of the family.

The first match of the day was played under the rules of 1866 by the Diamond States and the Athletic.  The Blue and Black jumped out to an early advantage by plating nine aces in their first inning and five in their third inning.  The Athletic club made a valiant attempt at a comeback, narrowing the tally to 16 – 11 after their 6th inning.  However, the Diamond States were able to keep their Philadelphia adversaries at an arm’s length, winning the match by the final of 23 – 14.  The Delaware nine was lead at the striker’s line by Boots (6-6, 2 doubles, 4 aces), Blackbart (5-6, 3 doubles, 4 aces) and Lightening (4-6, 2 triples, 3 aces).  The victory improved the Diamond State’s record for the season to 6 wins against 2 losses.

In the second match of the day, the Atlas Nine of Delaware City took their turn against the Athletic BBC.  However, they did not fare as well as their counterparts.  In a defensive-minded match played under the rules of 1864, the Philadelphia club took an early 6-0 advantage.  The fielders on both clubs were on fine form from there.  The Atlas held the Athletic to three tallies over the remainder of the match.  However, the Delaware City strikers were only able to manage 3 aces of their own, falling by the final tally of 9-3.  With the loss, the Atlas record dropped to 0 wins to 2 losses.

The Diamond State BBC will be off next weekend in celebration of the Memorial Day holiday.  They will return to Ft. DuPont on Saturday, May 31st as they play host to the Minerva BBC of Bridgeton, NJ.
