Diamond State Takes a Pair of Defensive Battles from Lewes

The Diamond State Base Ball Club traveled north of their usual home grounds to play a pair of matches at the University of Delaware’s Goodstay Center in Wilmington.  Their opponent for the day was the Lewes BBC, as the two teams continue their quest for the Delaware Cup.

In the first game, Lewes jumped out to an early advantage with a pair of aces in their first inning.  The Blue and Black cut the deficit in half with an ace in their half of the inning.  From there, effective pitching and quality play in the field were the order of the day, as neither team tallied an ace over the next six innings.  The Delaware strikers managed an ace in their 7th inning to draw even.  In the Diamond State 9th inning, Memphis and Gator started off with singles and were advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a ground ball by Boots.  Blackbart singled to center field to bring in the winning tally.  The Diamond State strikers were lead by Gator, who had 3 hits during the game.

The second match of the day was an equally close affair.  The Delaware side managed only single aces in their second and sixth innings.  However, Memphis excelled between the pitcher’s points, holding the Lewes side scoreless over the first six innings of the seven-inning match.  In their last inning, Lewes quickly tallied to cut the Blue and Black lead to a single ace.  The Southern Delaware strikers were able to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out.  However, the Diamond State defense held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Diamond State Base Ball Club will return to their grounds at Ft. DuPont as part of the Delaware City Day festivities.  Members of the club will participate in the parade through downtown Delaware City. A pair of matches against the Mohican Base Ball Club of Kennett Square will begin at 1:00 pm.
