Diamond State Drops Nail-biters to Brandywine

On Saturday, September 20, the Diamond State Base Ball Club traveled to West Chester, PA to have the Brandywine BBC.  Under beautiful skies, the 2 nines faced off in a pair of back-and-forth matches.

In the first game, the two sides traded runs over the first pair of innings before the Delaware nine tallied four aces in their 3rd inning to take a 7-5 advantage.  In the fifth inning, the Brandywine Club tallied three times while the Diamond States added a single ace as the teams drew even at 8-8 in the scheduled 7-inning match.  The Pennsylvania side scored one in the top half of the seventh, but Diamond State answered back to send the game into extra innings.  Brandywine managed an ace in their half of the eight inning, but the Diamond States were unable to answer, dropping the match by the final score of 10-9.

The second match of the day was just as equally contested as the first.  Diamond State jumped out to a 2-ace advantage in the first inning on a home run by Triple B.  Brandywine countered with four aces in the third inning, but the Diamond States equalized with 2 more aces in their 3rd trip to the striker’s line.  The West Chester nine scored two more aces in the fifth, while Diamond State was only able to manage a single ace, once again coming up short by a single tally.  The final score was 6-5 to Brandywine’s advantage.

The Diamond State Base Ball Club will play their final scheduled match of the season next Saturday, September 27 at Hagley Museum in Wilmington.  Festivities will start at 1:00 pm, as spectators are invited to have a catch with the team or try their hand during batting practice.  Members of the club will also provide an overview of the 1864 game in advance of the 2:00 match against the Excelsior BBC of Arundel, MD.  For more information and directions, visit the Hagley event page.
