Diamond State Drops Nail-Biter at Dover Days

May 6, 2013- The Diamond State and Lewes Base Ball Clubs met under beautiful skies on the Legislative Green in Dover on May 5.  The match treated the Dover Days crowd to a well-played display of 19th century base ball.  The Blue and Black jumped out to an early 4-tally advantage and displayed excellent defensive prowess in keeping the Lewes nine from crossing the plate.  However, the Sussex Countians bounced back on the strength of a 4-run 6th inning and the clubs found themselves tied at the end of 7 innings.  The large crowd was in for a spectacular finish.  The Lewes club pushed across a tally in the 8th inning and took a 1-run advantage into the bottom of the 9th.  The Diamond States managed to get runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, but were unable to push across the tying tally.

Diamond State was led by Split and Blackbart, with 4 hits apiece.  Sonny in right field and Split at 2nd base displayed excellent defensive reactions in handling caroms off of the foliage along the border of the Green’s intimate confines.

The Diamond States will take a week off to celebrate mothers and then return to action on May 18th as they host the Fair Play BBC of Talbot County.  A 1:00 start time is scheduled for the home grounds at Ft. DuPont State Park.
