Atlas Nine Debut This Sunday

April 13, 2013 – Diamond State Base Ball Club opens its 2013 Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League season on Sunday at Recreation Acres Field in Glen Burnie, Maryland with a twin bill versus the host Excelsior Base Ball Club of Arundel.

Sunday will also mark the first time that Diamond State BBC has featured two nines. The first nine will be referred to as “Diamond State” and the second as “Atlas”. Each nine will play one half of Sunday’s doubleheader.

The Atlas nine have their own distinct uniform design and its win-loss record for league purposes will be separate from the Diamond State nine. The Atlas uniform, which is based upon common uniform designs of the 1860’s, consists of a black newsboy style cap with a gray star on the top, a white shirt with a black shield trimmed in gray with white letters spelling “ATLAS”, and black belts and trousers.

The original Atlas Base Ball Club of Delaware City was one of the original base ball clubs that formed in Delaware in the autumn of 1865; Diamond State being among the others. The Delaware City club featured local players and was among the most competitive amateur teams in Delaware throughout the mid-to-late 1860’s.
