DSBBC Logs Big Win Over New England Foe

August 5, 2012 – Yesterday, the Diamond State Base Ball Club made the short trip to the Terrapin Station Winery in Rising Sun, Maryland to meet the Essex Base Ball Club of Newbury, Massachusetts for the very first time.  The Essex, one of New England’s finest ball clubs, journeyed to the Mid-Atlantic for a weekend tour.

Diamond State and the Bay State nine battled each other and rain showers during a spirited but gentlemanly affair.  The Essex club showed little ill effects of their travel and jumped out to an early advantage.  As the raindrops began to fall during the middle innings, so did the ball off the bat of the Delaware strikers.  The Blue & Black rallied to take the lead and displayed solid play in the field to hold on to a well-earned 15-11 victory.

Leftfielder and captain Kenny “Buzzsaw” Bonsall starred for Diamond State, striking a perfect 5-5 from the plate, with a double, 8 steals and 5 aces tallied.  Pitcher Dan “Mini” Minutola, catcher Frank “Dutch” Brevoort, centerfielder Andy “Zombie” Lynch,  second baseman Brian “Anchor” Betts and John “El Jefe” Medkeff all logged multiple hits for the Blue and Black.  Betts struck a key double in the late innings to drive home two runners and put the match squarely in favor of the Blue and Black.

Diamond State will move from grapes to grain, as they take on the Athletic BBC of Philadelphia on the grounds of Twin Lakes Brewery in Greenville, Delaware on August 11.
