July 22, 2012 – Diamond State Base Ball Club played host to the gentlemen from the Resolute Base Ball Club of Elizabeth yesterday afternoon at Fort DuPont State Park in Delaware City during the town’s Delaware City Day celebration. The Delaware nine prevailed in both games over the ballists from the Garden State in two very well-played defensive battles. Despite dropping both games, the Resolute club demonstrated a great deal of pluck and skill and earned the respect of all in attendance. Diamond State and Resolute have played one another several times in the past and each match has proven to be a fine display of this wonderful game of ball.

In the thrilling opening game, the Blue and Black and their adversary traded aces. Going into the final frame, the tally stood at 6-5 in favor of the home club. However, the Resolute proved true to their moniker, plating two aces in the top half of the seventh to take the lead. Not to be discouraged, Diamond State’s catcher Frank “Flying Dutchman” Brevoort led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Andy “Zombie” Lynch and finally scored on a sacrifice fly ball by left fielder Matt “Black Bart” Bartnicki. Captain and shortstop Kenny “Buzzsaw” Bonsall singled home Lynch to win the game for Diamond State, 8-7. Rob “Lightning” Zappaterrini, Brevoort, Lynch and Bonsall all had multiple hits for the winning club.

In the second game, the Resolute tallied a run in the first inning off of pitcher John “El Jefe” Medkeff but were unable to score for the remainder of the game. After surrendering 7 aces in the first game, Medkeff held the New Jersey nine to only 7 hits in the second. He was assisted by a host of terrific plays in the field, especially by Brevoort, Bartnick and Lynch. The Blue and Black featured a torrid hitting display in the second game, tallying a total of 10 aces. Diamond State strikers Zappaterrini, Brevoort, Lynch, Bartnicki, Bonsall and Brian “Anchor” Betts had multiple hits.

At the conclusion of the match, both clubs congratulated one another on two well-played games.  Those in attendance cheered both sides for their grit, determination and gentlemanly comportment.
