A Hot One in Princeton

July 1, 2012 – The Diamond State Base Ball Club traveled to Princeton, New Jersey yesterday for a pair of games against the Flemington Neshanock Base Ball Club.  Under the heat of the New Jersey sun, the day featured two closely contested matches and a fine demonstration of how gentleman play the game of base ball.  The throng that had gathered seemed genuinely pleased by the pluck and performance by both the host and visiting clubs.

In the opening game, played under 1864 rules, the Flemington club jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage.  The Blue & Black mounted a valiant comeback attempt, but in the end came up short, with the final tally resting at 7-6 in favor of the Garden State nine.

In the second match, played under the rules of 1873, Diamond State jumped out to an early advantage.  However,  the Neshanock mounted a strong surge, plating 3 aces in the last inning to tie the game.  They then played solidly in the field to force the game into extra innings.  The Neshanock’s surge continued in the 8th inning, as the Diamond States conceded nine tallies to the host team.  The Delaware nine managed to add 2 aces to their total in their turn at bat, but still came up short by the final of 19-12.

The day for the Diamond States was highlighted by a strong pitching performance from John “Jefe” Medkeff, stellar defense by Brian “Anchor” Betts in his inaugural appearance at third base, and consistent striking by Dan “Mini” Minutola (7 for 7 in the second game).

The Diamond State Base Ball Club will continue their string of road games on July  8, as they travel to Philadelphia to face the Athletic BBC in historic Fairmount Park.  The club will then return to their home grounds at Ft. DuPont on July 14, as they play host to the Resolutes of Elizabeth, NJ.
