May 21, 2012– The Diamond State BBC held their first match of the season yesterday on their home grounds at Ft. DuPont in Delaware City.  Their opponent for the day was the Potomac Nine of Washington, DC.

The first game, played under the fly-ball rules of 1866, was a high scoring battle from the very beginning.  The Blue and Black came out swinging hot bats, with each striker seeing two trips to the line in the first inning, on the way to a 15-tally frame.  There was no quit in the Potomac Nine, as they stormed back in the middle innings to make it a close affair.  However, the Diamond States mounted another large inning in the sixth, with another 11 aces crossing the plate.  When the dust settled, the Diamond States took the match by the final score of 30-16.  The offensive barrage was the highest tally for the Delaware nine since the summer of 1867, when the original Diamond States took a 40-29 victory from the Wawaset BBC of Wilmington.

The second game of the match was played under 1864 rules, with the bound-rule giving home plate a rest from the pounding it took in the opening game.  Solid pitching by Memphis held the Potomac strikers to 4 aces. However, through the first 6 innings, the Diamond States were limited to only 6 tallies.  With the match heading towards a dramatic finish, the hometown strikers were able to string together some timely hits and expand the lead to 9-4, which would stand up as the match’s final result.

The Diamond State BBC will continue their home schedule on June 3rd when they face off against the Cecil BBC of Chesapeake City.  This is the second engagement of the season between these two clubs, with the clubs splitting a pair of matches.  Both games were decided in walk-off fashion, so these matches promise to provide the Delaware City spectators with plenty of excitement.
