DSBBC Splits Two With Athletic
April 18, 2011 – The Diamond State Base Ball Club traveled north for a pair of matches against the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia under the shadow of Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park. The Diamond State nine encountered an Athletic club that is much improved from their inaugural campaign.
In the first match of the doubleheader, a back-and-forth affair ended with the Blue and Black on the short end of a 13-11 battle. The club’s strikers were lead by Dutch, who went 4-6 with 2 doubles and 3 aces. Steady, Ring and Mr. B contributed 3 hits each and Snake had a double and tallied a pair of aces. On loan to the Philadelphia nine, Farmer had a successful game, gathering four hits.
In the second game, the Diamond State defense lead the way to a 14-5 victory. Mini’s hurling and an excellent effort by all of the fielders limited the Athletic to just 2 aces through the first six innings. In the meantime, the offense was able to build a lead under the batsmanship of Jefe (3-3, BB, 4 aces), Steady (3-4, 2B, BB) and Dutch (3-3, BB, 4 aces)
Following the second match, the Diamond State club was faced with a challenge of strength by the Athletic club in the form of a tug-o-war. The Delaware nine came out victorious in their first ever foray into that exercise.
The 2011 season continues on April 30 as the Diamond State BBC travels to Sussex County to welcome the new club Lewes BBC.
