Diamond State Falls Short In Elkton

April 11, 2011 – The Diamond State Base Ball Club opened their season on Saturday, April 9 by making the short journey to Terrapin Station Winery, the new grounds of the Eclipse BBC of Elkton. Many of the Diamond State faithful accompanied the club on the trip and were treated to sunny skies and spirited play. The clubs squared off for two tightly contested matches, with the Elkton club edging the Diamond State nine in both.

The first game was a back-and-forth affair until the Eclipse made a late surge and won by the final tally of 13-9. The Blue and Black were led offensively by Stones, Mini and Stretch with 4 hits apiece. Dutch added 3 hits, including a triple.

In the second game, the closely contested play continued, but Elkton was able to build an early lead that the Diamond State club could not overcome.  The Delaware nine fell 18-11 to their hosts.  Dutch lead the club with 4 hits in the game, including a double.  Snake and El Jefe also had excellent games at the plate with 3 hits each.

Mini picked up right where he left off last season by hurling every inning of the doubleheader. He was able to keep the Eclipse strikers off-balance for much of the day, holding them to fewer aces than which they are accustomed.

The Diamond State BBC will continue their season-opening road trip on Sunday, April 17 when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Athletic BBC in historic Fairmount Park at noon.
