DSBBC Rolls In Home Finale

September 27, 2010 – The Diamond State Base Ball Club finished its 2010 home schedule in fine fashion yesterday by winning a double-header against the outmanned first year club, the Excelsior BBC of Arundel, on a cool, cloudy day at Fort DuPont State Park. The visiting nine from Glen Burnie, Maryland demonstrated their fine ability throughout the match but was unable to overtake the more experienced Delawareans.

Game 1

Diamond State lost the bat toss and Excelsior chose to take the field first.  The Blue and Black seized the opportunity to strike at the new ball first, plating one tally in the first inning.  The home club never looked back, as they scored at least one ace in all but the seventh inning.  Excelsior battled mightily and managed to avoid the whitewash as they plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh, succumbing to Diamond State 18 to 2.

Jake “Snake”  Bockman lead the offensive charge with a perfect  day at the plate (5 for 5, 3 aces).  Joe “Deuce” Minutola (4 for 5, 2 aces), Doug “One Finger” Brown (4 for 5, ace), and Garrett “Steady” Perdick (4 for 5, 3 aces) also chipped in offensively for Diamond State.  Dan “Mini” Minutola hurled another gem of a game, keeping the Excelsior strikers off balance all game and limiting them to two runs for the contest.

Game 2

The Excelsiors hoped to turn their luck around in the second game of the double header while Diamond State looked to continue their hot hitting and timely defense from the first game.  Arundel batted first and were held scoreless for all but the third inning.  Diamond State’s strikers did not have as much success in the second game with numerous being caught “on the bound” and counting as outs in this match played under 1864 rules.  The Blue and Black had enough ginger to prevail over the Arundel nine by a final of 6 to 1.

Several strikers contributed two hits in this game, including Snake (2 for 3, 2 aces), Mini (2 for 3, 1 ace),  Steady (2 for 3, 2 aces) and Frank “The Flying Dutchman” Brevoort (2 for 4, 1 ace).

These two victories move the Diamond States’ record to 11 wins and 19 losses during the 2010 campaign.

The next game is Diamond States’ Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League season finale, when they host Eastern Division rival the Dauntless BBC of Havre de Grace.  The game will be played on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Riverview Beach Park in Pennsville, New Jersey beginning at 1:00 p.m..
