Diamond State & Chessie Tussle
August 9, 2010 – For the second time in three weeks Diamond State hosted a match at Fort DuPont State Park, this time against the always capable Chesapeake Base Ball Club of Baltimore, Maryland for a key divisional matchup. On this day, Diamond State would come up on the short end of two hotly contested games, both which featured several lead changes.
In the first match of the double header, the Baltimore nine struck early with 5 tallies in the top of the first inning, and didn’t let up scoring at least one tally in every inning. Diamond State tried to muster up the tallies to compete scoring four tallies in the bottom of the first inning and were able to keep the game close, but unfortunately couldn’t overtake the Chesapeake Nine for the victory. Chesapeake prevailed by a final score of 17-13. Frank ‘Flying Dutchman’ Brevoort (4 for 4) and Earl ‘Stones’ Benningfield (4 for 5) lead the offensive charge for the Blue and Black. Jeff ‘Farmer’ Stepanek (3 for 4), Charlie ‘House’ Kashner (3 for 4) and Kenny ‘Buzzsaw’ Bonsall (3 for 3) also had outstanding games at the plate.
Trying to put the disappointment of the first game behind them, the Diamond nine came out strong in the second game of the afternoon, plating three tallies in the top of the first inning. Chesapeake’s tenacity was on display though, as they matched and exceeded Diamond State’s tallies plating four tallies themselves in the bottom of the first. The Blue and Black were unable to muster up much more offense the rest of the game, and ended up falling by a final tally of 7-3. ‘House’ (3 for 4) lead the Diamond States offensively with, hurler Dan ‘Mini’ Minutola (2 for 3) and assistant captain and 3rd baseman Garrett ‘Steady’ Perdick (2 for 3) also contributing.
Diamond State’s record drops to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League’s Eastern Division.
